Glala remained in the National Fire Service in Liverpool. She was put up for sale on the 30th April 1946 but the 1947 edition of Lloyd's Register of Yachts shows that she was still owned by the government then. The register includes a note that she now has new decks made of Kauri Pine, so she must have been rebuilt by the government. Photographs from later on show that the accommodation aft had been rebuilt, the funnel had been shortened and there was an unusual companionway hatch on the afterdeck. By 1948 she was owned by Roy Baker who had bought her for £7000*. From 1952 onwards, following a divorce, she was owned by his ex-wife Peggy Lloyd. According to her daughter, Glala was kept on the Thames at Richmond at this time. In 1959 she was owned by Lt Jack Marshall R.N.R. and from 1960 he was a joint owner with three others: B.V. Devitt, Mrs June Breton and R. Russell. * It's not so easy to convert £7000 into today's money. Relative to things like the price of bread, it's about £200,000, but relative to incomes it's more like £500,000. |

Glala on the River Hamble, winter 1963-64. [enlarge] From 1962 to 1978 Glala was owned by R.F. Stuttle and based at Southampton on the River Hamble. This was her longest period of continuous ownership. In the summers of the late 1960s and the early '70s she was in the Mediterranean, cruising the Italian Riviera.

Pont de la Roque, France 1971. [enlarge] The earliest colour picture of the boat showing the post-war restoration. The cabin sides around the engine room, under the funnel, are original. Everything aft has been rebuilt. A frame to support an awning has been added over the main deck, it provided shade from the sun but was found to fill with water when it rained. |
